Dr. John H. Widmer April 15, 1935 – June 24, 2020

Dr. John Henry Widmer, 85, passed away on Wednesday, June 24, 2020, at his home in Brunswick, Missouri.

John was born the son of Leo and Louise (Finnell) Widmer on April 15, 1935, in Salisbury, Missouri.  He graduated from St. Joseph Catholic School in Salisbury, Missouri in 1953.  That same year John enlisted in the United States Navy where he served in the Pacific on various aircraft carriers, including the USS Hancock, until honorably discharged on April 13, 1956.

After returning home, John enrolled at the University of Missouri – Columbia.    While in college he was united in marriage to Joan Frances Rotert, in Montrose, Missouri, on August 23, 1958.  He earned his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine in 1963.

During his veterinary career, John focused primarily on large animals.  He worked for a Charolais ranch in Mayetta, Kansas, the Hampton Feedlot in Brunswick, Missouri, various sale barns in the surrounding area and concluded his career with 18 years as a USDA meat inspector before retiring in 2001.

Since he was a young boy, John had a passion for horses. As a sideline, he began breeding, raising, and selling registered quarter horses in 1971 and continued to do so until 2017.

John’s faith had a significant impact on every part of his life.  He was a member of the St. Boniface Catholic Church where he often attended daily Mass, served on the parish council, and assisted the youth with preparing for the sacrament of confirmation.

John was well known for giving back to the community and helping anyone in need.  He volunteered with many organizations including the Brunswick School Board (President, 8 years), Knights of Columbus (Grand Knight), Brunswick American Legion Post (Commander), Arrowhead Saddle Club and Brunswick Food Pantry (19 years) to name a few.

John loved his family, friends, Royals baseball, playing cards, and horses.  He would never tell us in which order.

John is survived by his children, Mike (Becky) Widmer of Arkansas City, Kansas, Mark (Danielle) Widmer of Spring Creek, Nevada, Mary (Rick Kochuyt) Widmer of Leawood, Kansas, and Marla Laidler of Chillicothe, Missouri; eight grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; one brother, Bob (Lil) Widmer of Salisbury, Missouri; one sister, Anne Gramling of Kirksville, Missouri; and numerous in-laws, nieces, and nephews.
