Gerald William Kruse


Gerald William Kruse was born on November 3, 1933, in Woodland Hospital, Moberly, MO, and died on Wednesday, October 21, 2015, at his home in rural Brunswick, MO.  He was the oldest of two children born to Bill (William E.) and Lillian (Wolf ) Kruse, Brunswick. Funeral services were held at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Brunswick, MO on Saturday, October 24, 2015, at 2:30 p.m., preceded by visitation at the church.  Pall bearers were his eight grandsons.  Burial was in the Elliott Grove Cemetery, Brunswick, MO, with Military Honors. Gerald, was baptized (1933) and confirmed (1947) at St. John’s Lutheran Church where he was a life-long member. He graduated from Brunswick High School in 1951, and attended Chillicothe Business College for two winter semesters while farming part-time. On August 15, 1954 Jerry married his high school sweetheart, Wilma H. Dammann.   Gerald was drafted in November 1955 by the U.S. Army.  He trained as a HAM radio operator and finished serving in Honolulu, Hawaii where Wilma was later able to join him.  He was honorably discharged on August 5, 1957 at the US Army Personnel Center in Oakland, CA. Jerry returned to the Brunswick area to farm, planting row crops and raising livestock, and worked for a few years as a substitute U.S. Mail Carrier. Jerry served his community and church on the following boards and organizations: Missouri District Lutheran Laymen’s League from 1954 until present, serving as President from 1980-84; Public Water Supply District No. 2, 1967 – 97; Brunswick R-II School Board Member, 1969-1984; Chariton County Health Department Board 1986-1997; and the MFA Oil Company Board, March 1992 to Sept. 2001, and many local church offices.  Jerry enjoyed history, meeting people, and the traveling that came with these jobs Jerry is survived by his wife Wilma Kruse of 61 years, and their four daughters and  husbands: Kathy Manson (and Paul) Brunswick, MO; Karen Moser (and Bill) Peoria, IL;  Debbie Hickle (and Bill), Rolla, MO; and Diane Rice (and Tim) Brunswick, MO. He is also survived by fourteen grandchildren: Kristen (Manson) and Greg Butterfield;  Michael Manson; Lydia (Manson) and Trevor Wagy; Matthew (Angie) Moser; Stephen (Tina) Moser; Sam Moser; David (Emily) Hickle;  Mark (Jenna) Hickle;  Nathan Hickle; Sarah Hickle;  Rachel Hickle; Hannah Rice, Ben Rice and Abby Rice.  Gerald is also survived by seven great-grandchildren: Henry and Evelyn Butterfield; Isabelle and Roselyn Moser; Ben and Abby Hickle; Noah Moser; and by his sister Annetta Guilford of Eldon, MO.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill Kruse (1983) and his mother, Lillian Kruse (1996); and his brother-in-law Jim Guilford in 2014. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church of Brunswick or the Missouri District Lutheran Laymen’sLeague which supports the “The Lutheran Hour”.
