James Everett Chowning June 7, 1954 – March 5, 2023

James Everett Chowning, 68, formerly of Dean Lake, MO, passed away on Sunday, March 5, 2023 at his home in Memphis, MO.  A visitation will be held at Breshears Memorial Chapel in Brunswick, MO on Sunday, March 19, 2023 from 1:00 – 3:00 P.M.

Jim, as he was known by his family and friends, was born on June 7, 1954, in Brookfield, MO, the son of Robert and Betty (Myers) Chowning.  In 1972, he graduated from Northwestern High School in Mendon, MO and went on to attend the University of Missouri in Columbia, MO.  In 1974, Jim began working for the Sante Fe railroad, which later became Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF).  He worked as a track foreman for over 40 years until his retirement in 2014.

Jim loved spending time with his family and friends, deer hunting, traveling, especially road trips, his dog, mowing his yard, and collecting everything from guns, knives, coins, to plates.  He was a member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way union.

Jim is survived by his mother, Betty Jean Chowning, of Brookfield, MO; two sons, Eliot Dawson Chowning and his wife, Cheryl, of Anchorage, AK and Evan Isaac Chowning and his wife, Karolyn, of Oklahoma City, OK; five grandchildren, William Chowning, Dexter Chowning, Jaxson Chowning, Nadiya Chowning, and Aloysious Chowning; four siblings, Bobby Dean Chowning, Barbara Jean Grant, Ronald Bruce Chowning and his wife, Patsy, and Diana Lynn Diehl; he is also survived by three step-children, Rob Kerkmann, Kim Kerkmann, and Jason Kerkmann.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Tanya (Gore) Chowning; his father, Robert Dawson Chowning; two brothers-in-law, Russell Grant and Gary Diehl; one niece, Jessica Diehl; one nephew, Jamie Hughes; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Harold and Beverly Gore.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations to be made to Wharton Cemetery.  Donations may be left at or mailed to Breshears Memorial Chapel, 207 W. Broadway, Brunswick, MO, 65236.
