Leslie Louis Heisel September 16, 1924 – March 10, 2023

Leslie Louis Heisel, 98, of Mendon, MO, passed away on Friday, March 10, 2023, at the University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia, MO.  Funeral services will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Brunswick, MO on Wednesday, March 15, 2023.  Pastor Theiss will officiate the service.  Visitation will be held prior to the service at the church on Wednesday, March 15, 2023, from 10:00 – 11:00 A.M.  Burial will be at Newcomer Cemetery in Mendon, MO.

Les, as he was known by his family and friends, was born on September 16, 1924, in Chariton County, MO, the son of Louis and Emma (Pittman) Heisel.  Les graduated from Brunswick High School in 1942 and went on to attend the University of Missouri in Columbia.  During his time at the University, Les was a proud member of Marching Mizzou.  On August 21, 1948, he married the love of his life, Thelma Witt, in Kansas City, KS.  Together they were blessed with one daughter, Shirley Joanna “Joey” Heisel.

Les was a lifelong farmer and rancher who also had ownership in Mendon Feed and Grain. He was one of the original founders of the Mendon Lions Club, a MFA Oil Delegate, a Northwestern School Board Member, a Chariton County Board of Education member, and a member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church.  Les loved spending time with his family and friends, reading, and traveling.

Les is survived by his beloved wife of the home, Thelma; his daughter, Joey Tomlin of Jefferson City, MO; one granddaughter, Abigail Anton and her husband Clark of Columbia, MO; three great-grandchildren, Maeve and Callan Anton of Columbia, MO and Olivia Tucker of Nebraska; he is also survived by two nieces, Carey Chamber and Dr. Margaret Heisel.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Emma Heisel; one grandson, Gabriel Tucker; one brother, Orland Heisel; one niece, Dr. Mary Jane Heisel; and one son-in-law, John Tomlin.

Pallbearers will be Danny Price, Ricky Price, Stevie Meyer, Justin Alberson, Kyle Dickerson, Jonny Dickerson, and Sidney Lewis.  Honorary pallbearers will be John Heisel, Ron Koch, Duane Leimkuehler, Paul Manson, John Benson, John Sanders, Bob Littleton, and Duane Kahler.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations to be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church or Newcomer Cemetery.  Donations may be left at or mailed to Breshears Memorial Chapel, 207 W. Broadway, Brunswick, MO, 65236.
