Wilford Ray VanDeventer March 7, 1937 – June 5, 2021

Wilford Ray VanDeventer, 84, of DeWitt, MO, passed away on Saturday, June 5, 2021 at Big Bend Retreat in Slater, MO.  Funeral services will be held at Breshears Memorial Chapel in Brunswick, MO on Tuesday, June 8, 2021 at 10:30 A.M.  Reverend Lanny Lybarger will officiate the service.  No visitation will be held.  Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in DeWitt, MO.  Military honors will be performed by Brunswick American Legion Post #7.

Ray, as he was known to his family and friends, was born on March 7, 1937 in Carrollton, MO, the son of Lewis and Evelyn (Pattie) VanDeventer.  Ray attended high school in DeWitt, MO.  On September 6, 1959, Ray married the love of his life, Virginia, in DeWitt, MO.  Together they were blessed with six children, Gary, Larry, Terry, Sherri, Jerry, and Barry.

On July 11, 1960, he enlisted into the United States Army, and he honorably served his country until July 6, 1962.  Ray worked for Amoco Oil Company as a Crane Operator.  He continued as a Crane Operator with Local 101 until his retirement.  In retirement, Ray was the caretaker of Evergreen Cemetery for 10 years.

Ray was a Baptist in the Christian faith who loved spending time his family and friends.  He also loved hunting, trout fishing, wood working, mowing, working, cutting wood, boating, and water skiing.  He was a member of the Brunswick American Legion Post #7, AMVETS, the Local 101 Union, and a member of the DeWitt Betterment Community Club.

Ray is survived by his beloved wife of the home, Virginia; five children, Gary VanDeventer of DeWitt, MO, Larry VanDeventer of Savannah, GA, Sherri VanDeventer of Lee’s Summit, MO, Jerry VanDeventer of Carrollton, MO, and Barry VanDeventer and his wife Jenny of DeWitt, MO; sixteen grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; three siblings, Laveda Wright of Hale, MO, Lewis VanDeventer of Buckner, MO, and Bertie Sewell and her husband Richard of Houstonia, MO; six in-laws, Patsy Walker and her husband Mike of DeWitt, MO, Sharon Carridi of Phoenix, AZ, Karen Adams of Mendon, MO, Jim Sparks of DeWitt, MO, Bill Sparks and his wife Norma of DeWitt, MO, and Cheryl Arney of DeWitt, MO; and two aunts, Betty Nichols and her husband Alan of Carrollton, MO and Annette Hartwig and her husband Steve of Marsha, MO.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Evelyn VanDeventer, two sons, Wilford Ray Jr., who died in infancy, and Terry VanDeventer.

Pallbearers will be Barry VanDeventer Jr., Colten VanDeventer, Tyler VanDeventer, Jonathon VanDeventer, Elizabeth Best, and Haleigh VanDeventer.

Honorary pallbearers will be Crystal Brown, Amanda Begeman, Dexter VanDeventer, Spencer VanDeventer, Jasper VanDeventer, Samantha Frock, Hannah VanDeventer, Hadley VanDeventer, Hope VanDeventer, and Ava VanDeventer.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations to the DeWitt Betterment Community Center.  Donations may be left at or mailed to Breshears Memorial Chapel, 207 W. Broadway, Brunswick, MO, 65236.
